Brief Historical Events at Mena House:

Mena House was originally a royal lodge of the Khedive Ismail for himself and his guest when hunting in the desert or visiting the Pyramids at Giza. 

1869:  with the opening of the Suez Canal, the royal lodge was enlarged and turn into a palace to welcome the Empress Eugenie of France.  Also a road was built between Cairo and the Pyramids which made visits to Giza much easier.
1886:  Mena Hotel, as it was called, opened.
1909: Empress Eugenie, the window of Napoleon III, arrived for the second visit of the Pyramids.  The Prince and Princess of Wales also visited the Pyramids.
1943: Peace Treaty to end World War II was signed by Franklin D. Roosevelt, Winston Churchill and General Chiang Kai-Shek.
1971: The hotel matched the highest standards of the International hotel and become a member of “The Leading Hotels of the World”.
2017: Mena House is taken over by Marriott Hotel.
